This was basically the stance that Jeremy Corbyn took on the issue, when journalists thought it was a cheap gotcha - that he was a republican at heart but he wouldn't force the matter and would instead focus his efforts elsewhere. Not a fan of the man but credit where it was due for being pragmatic on this issue at least.
