I also keep wondering why the claim that "we can't afford net-zero" has any traction, given the potential costs of not making substantial progress in that direction. It's not like we have the option of doing nothing and spending all the money on other things without all the other things (funding NHS, transport, heating houses, cooling houses, controlling borders) getting a lot more expensive!

I absolutely agree that pragmatism must rule the day. Are there ANY politicians who are willing to make this case?
